Softonic.com is the leader in the European and Latin American market in free software sales and downloads, and number two worldwide. Founded in Barcelona in 1997, today Softonic has near to 200 employees of 25 different nationalities. It offers one of the largest collections of software, shareware, freeware and commercial demos, all analysed, tested and validated in several languages by an expert team.
Currently, Softonic.com offers over 130,000 software titles for Windows, Mac and mobile telephones. Softonic.com is available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Dutch and Japanese. The company has its headquarters in Barcelona, and has offices in San Francisco, Shanghai, Tokyo and Madrid.
Business relevant facts
In October 2001 the Catalan investment group CORSABE acquired 10% of the company’s capital through an investment of 480,810 €.
In April 2003, Softonic.com started selling software through its web, thanks to the creation of its electronic commerce platform.
In October 2004, Softonic.com began its conquest of the German market with Softonic.de, a site addressed to a market of 50 million German speaking internet users.
November 2005, saw the launch of the English version of the Softonic site, a major step towards trying to become world leaders in the sector.
In 2007, coinciding with its 10th anniversary, Softonic is launched in French, followed by the Italian and Portuguese sites in 2008.
2009 was the year Softonic was launched in Polish, and the company took its first steps towards opening the Asian market with the Chinese version of the site.
In 2010 Softonic has consolidated its global offer of products and services with the launching of the Dutch and the Japanese sites.
